Great Watches Under $5,000

TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 01

TAG Heuer is one of the most iconic watch brands of all time. While it may not be as luxurious as some other Swiss companies, it certainly has an impressive history. Vintage Heuer models are some of the most sought-after watches among collectors. However, modern TAG Heuer watches are just as exciting and versatile. Many of their most iconic collections continue to amaze us with their creativity, craftsmanship, and quality. The TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 with its skeleton dial is one such timepiece. This masculine, 43-mm watch features a stainless steel case, automatic movement, tachymeter bezel, chronograph function, and an awesome skeletonized dial. It’s unlike any like vintage Carrera model, and that’s more than ok. Some may find its open dial too busy, though it really only takes a few seconds to get used to. There’s a date window between 3 and 4 o’clock, large chronograph subdials, and color-coded pushers for the chronograph function. Is it the modern man’s sports chronograph? That is a matter of person opinion, but it is surely up there with some other contestants.

Enthusiast’s Corner: Rare and Exceptional Timepieces

Heuer Calculator

The vintage Heuer scene is probably as vast as Omega’s vintage line up. It contains many interesting watches from the 1930s onward. For many, Heuer’s golden era was the late 60s and early 70s with their chunkier, larger steel sports models. I love this era, too. After the smaller and classy collections of the 60s, this new era was bold, daring, and colorful. Timepieces like the Heuer Calculator emerged at this time. Released in 1972, it was among the first of its kind. Its 45 x 48-mm steel case was massive by 70s standards and housed automatic calibers like the Heuer Calibre 11, 15, or Valjoux 7740. The Heuer Calculator, however, has more than just impressive size to offer. As its name suggests, its features are also special. To start, you have a 2-subdial chronograph and a date window at 6 o’clock. However, what makes the Calculator a practical choice for many professionals is its slide rule bezel. Best known from the Breitling Navitimer, which has an internal slide rule bezel, the Heuer Calculator features an external slide rule bezel. It is a watch with a ton of character and great design.

Iconic Timepieces: Great Value for Money

Heuer Vintage Camaro 7220

When the watch media talks about Heuer, especially vintage Heuer, the focus is usually on the usual suspects: Carreras, Autavias, and Monacos. However, there is another collection that often flies under the radar that has some amazing watches to offer. I’m talking about the Heuer Camaro. This Swiss chronograph takes its name from one of America’s most iconic muscle cars: the Chevrolet Camaro. According to legend (and Jack Heuer himself), he chose “Camaro” for the then-new Heuer model line because he needed a typical American name to help strengthen the brand’s presence in the US market. The plan was a success. The Camaro became an iconic Heuer model with many variations in terms of dial layout (2 or 3-subdials) and color (black, white, panda, or reverse panda). The Camaro has a 37-mm rectangular case, so it’s not a very large timepiece. That said, it is immediately recognizable just like its big brother, the Monaco. This Heuer Camaro ref. 7220 has the more desirable 3-subdial layout with a black dial color and the iconic Valjoux 72 movement. It doesn’t get much better than that.
